Essential Oil Toxicity – Three Schools of Thought

Essential Oil Toxicity – Three Schools of Thought
By Vicki Opfer

March 2009

When single molecules are extracted out of an oil and are used by themselves, or they are created synthetically in a lab, they can be toxic.  Phenols are one of those.  So does that mean that oils containing phenols need to be used cautiously?

When those same molecules are left in the oil, and the pure, whole, unadulterated essential oil is used, we don’t see the same toxicity. This is because there are other molecules that seem to buffer those molecules in the body.

I’d like to remind you that there are 3 models of aromatherapy today:

1. the English – oils are usually diluted, and the English trained aromatherapists seem to be afraid to use the oils.   I wonder whether this model was created because someone used synthetic or low quality oils and observed a bad response.

2. the German model – essential oils are used primarily through smell, often for emotional balancing or mood enhancement.

3. the French model – the oils are used undiluted, often in fairly large quantities.  They use them topically, internally, vaginally, rectally, etc.   They do not seem to be afraid of toxicity, as French medical doctors have told me that they simply don’t observe toxicity when using pure, therapeutic grade oils.  They told me that essential oils are very different than fatty oils which can be hard on the liver.  Pure essential oils are light, volatile, and do not affect the liver.   Scientists can see them in the bloodstream within a few minutes of application, and within 2.5 hours, all traces of them are gone.   However, the effects have been known to last indefinitely.

When I hear someone who is concerned about essential oil toxicity, or seem to be afraid to use oils, I realize that they have been trained in the English model.

With that said, yes, some oils like oregano and cinnamon can be warm on the skin.   If an oil heats up on the skin, we rub a little pure vegetable oil over the area and it cools down within a few minutes.

If someone is very sick, pregnant, very young, or very old, we’re respectful and use small quantities of oils, and we often choose oils which are extremely gentle on the body such as lavender and chamomile.  It’s not that we think that the oils can cause harm.   We just choose to always err on the side of caution, and we’re respectful.

I’ve been in Young Living for 15 years now, and I have trained and observed thousands of people, and I have never seen anyone hurt, in any way, by any of our essential oils.

On a very rare occasion, someone will break out in a rash after using an oil, and when I ask, “Is this the first time you’ve ever had a rash response?”   Their answer is always the same – “No, I’ve had rashes before.”   The oils seem to be trying to get rid of toxins in the body, and since the skin is an eliminative organ, sometimes if other eliminative organs are compromised, the body will use the skin. When in doubt, use a small amount, and see what happens.

When someone is on chemotherapy, it’s a choice they’ve made consciously, and we need to respect their choice.  They are having chemicals put into their body to purposely lower the immune system or kill cells – some healthy, and some not healthy.   I just don’t think it’s a good idea to bombard the body with a lot of essential oils during that time, as it might be confusing.   If someone I loved was on chemotherapy, I might offer them simple oils like lavender to help them sleep, or a little PanAway for the pain, but I would wait until they were finished with their chemotherapy and wanted to rebuild their body before using larger amounts of essential oils.

We have a lot to offer just to help improve the quality of life for our loved ones – help ease their pain and depression, and help them get a better night’s sleep.  It’s a gift we can give them.

Prostate Cancer? Don’t Let Your Doctor Scare You To Death!

Prostate Cancer? Don’t Let Your Doctor Scare You to Death!

by Jacquelyn Close

Today, Friday, March 20th, 2009, on CNN’s segment called the Daily Dose, a woman MD on the segment said that research now shows that chemotherapy actually increases the rate of death in men with Prostate Cancer. They found that men who do nothing can live 20 to 30 fairly healthy years. Men who undergo chemotherapy usually die within 3 years of treatment. And this was true even for advanced stages of Prostate Cancer.

I tried to find this report on CNN’s website, so I could get the name of the Doctor, but a search did not yield results. If you weren’t watching this, I hope that this information will come to light so that you and your families can be assured of the truth.

Doctors have known for years that chemotherapy kills. Ralph W Moss, PhD, formerly with Sloan Kettering Cancer Institute, has written numerous reports and books exposing the fact that chemotherapy is only moderately effective for 4 cancers, Prostate Cancer and Breast Cancer are not among those 4. Yet Doctors continue to prescribe chemotherapy for 100% of cancers and insurance companies continue to pay for it, because it is the accepted standard of care. What is caring about scaring someone into going through chemotherapy when you are in fact killing that person?

I chose to forgo chemotherapy in 1985 when I was told I had just 2 months to live. I preferred to take my chances with less drastic options. I did have radiation therapy, even though my oncologist, the head of oncology at Massachussetts General Hospital, thought that it would be a waste of time. In fact, he required that I sign a paper acknowledging my understanding that they had given me so much radiation that if I didn’t die from the cancer, I would be dead from the radiation in 2 years.

It was not the doctors, surgeons, oncologists, or the radiation that rid my body of cancer. It was the healing power of faith in God, in God’s love, Meditation, Prayer, Positive Healing Affirmations, diet, exercise, and other natural means that changed my life. When I found essential oils my whole life changed for the better and I haven’t seen a doctor since 1999. Personally, I think I’m healthier and happier for it.

May you find a way through your darkest hours with hope, light and love.

Anti-biotics vs. Pro-biotics

Anti-biotics vs. Pro-biotics

by Dana Christisen, CRP, Natural Health Coach

Probiotics. We all know that the prefix pro- means ‘for’ but what you may not know is the word biotic means life. When I look at the word probiotic, I see “for life”. This led me to consider the word anti-biotic. The prefix anti- means against, and the word biotic still means life, which makes antibiotic “against life”.

Has anyone noticed the amount of folks that need to take antibiotics lately? Has anyone besides myself noticed the decline in the effectiveness of these drugs? When someone tells me they are on an antibiotic, I immediately ask them if they are taking a probiotic also. Approximately 99 out of 100 people that I ask, don’t have a clue what a probiotic is. In fact, it is kind of funny, but the spell checker on my word processor does not know what it is either because every time I have typed this word, it has been underlined in red.

In our bodies, there is a whole world of microorganisms. They are there in the billions and they will continue to be there even after we are dead (at least for a while). They have a job to do. Some of these bacteria are ‘friendly’ or good and some of the bacteria are bad. They all have names. Some of you may recognize these names like Helicobacter pylori and Candida Albicans. Yeast infections, ulcers, gastritis and many types of cancer can be caused by these bad bacteria, mostly in folks with immune systems that are challenged.

You may recognize some of the names of friendly bacteria like Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium. Unlike the many dis-eases listed in association with bad bacteria, these good bacteria have a huge list of health conditions that they help to correct. Probiotic supplementation may help to prevent colon cancer, may lower cholesterol, may help to lower blood pressure, improve your immune system and help to prevent infections, may reduce inflammation, may help your body to absorb minerals and may help relieve some diarrhea.

Our balance of helpful bacteria versus harmful bacteria is supposed to be 85 percent helpful to 15 percent harmful. This ratio is hard to maintain in this environment that we live in. Exposure to toxins in our food, the air we breathe, chlorine in water supplies, and antibiotics, all take a toll on the good bacteria in our bodies. The fact is that there will be bacteria in your body, however you get to choose whether it is mostly good or mostly bad.

One way I thought of that helps me to describe this bacteria in our bodies is to compare it to a garden. Whether your garden has flowers or vegetables in it, you will have weeds that grow up in your garden. Would you consider putting Round-up on the entire garden just because you had a few weeds? When you take an antibiotic for an infection, it tries to kill all of the bacteria, not only the culprit behind your infection. But guess what happens, they don’t all die, only the weak ones. Then you may be left with a gut full of very strong bad bacteria.

This is one reason why it is so important for everyone to supplement their diet with probiotics. You do get them from some foods like yogurt, and years ago, we would get them from the soil. However, in this day and age, with the chemicals that are sprayed on our crops, we no longer get very much good bacteria from the earth.

Now that you know why to supplement with probiotics, let me tell you when. What I like to do is take my probiotic supplements right before bed. This way they have a chance to work into the body and not be harmed by chlorine in water or toxins in my food. I take a supplement of about 15 billion bacteria per serving and contains ten different strains of bacteria. When I reach 50, I will need to increase that amount to 30 billion. Also, the probiotic supplement that I take is enteric-coated, which means that the bacteria will make it to the intestines.

I am not a doctor and I do not diagnose or treat any health condition. I am only giving you a compilation of information that I have gained over the years of studying natural health. Any information I am giving you is only my opinion and is what I would do for myself. Until next week, may all of your bacteria be good ones, naturally speaking.

Mold Defeated by Essential Oils

Mold Defeated by Essential Oils

by Jacquelyn A Close, RA

Mold has caused untold trouble for millions of people. People have lost their homes, lost their health, and many have no idea that it is mold exposure that may be causing, contributing to, or exacerbating their colds, flu, chronic sinus infections, ear infections, asthma or even more serious health problems. Mold is everywhere and cannot be completely eliminated from our lives. However, blends of certain highly concentrated plant extracts called essential oils offer a safe option that removes spores from the air and off of surface areas, thus reducing and often eliminating the negative health impacts of mold exposure.

I know most of you have heard that all you have to do to get rid of mold is just use bleach water. There are certain government agencies, including FEMA, who continue to dispense this outdated information, even though it is well known by scientists and mold remediation experts to be false, misleading and potentially dangerous. Why is this lie perpetuated when, according to scientists and experts in the field, using bleach is a bad and potentially dangerous option?

When you use bleach water to get rid of mold in your bathroom, what happens? The mold comes back. Right? You have to keep doing that month after month, because the mold keeps coming back. Professionals found that when they used bleach water, mold spores rebounded, or returned, usually in 24 hours. Worse, the mold was harder to get rid of every time bleach water was used.

Why is that? Why would mold spores be harder to get rid of every time you use bleach?

Will bleach kill mold?

Yes. On non-porous surfaces, it works quite well. So, why shouldn’t you just use bleach?

Because it only works on the non-porous surface where you apply the bleach. It does nothing to get rid of spores in the air. And worse, when you are wiping or scrubbing an area with bleach water, it stirs up dead mold spores, which are also known to cause allergic reactions. So, it actually puts more spores into the air. Airborne mold spores, whether living or dead, can have negative impacts on children, pets and anyone with an undeveloped or impaired immune system.

Bleach works on glazed ceramic tile but not grout, works on glass windows but not on wood window frames, works on some china but not stoneware, works on linoleum but not on concrete. I could go on. Bleach is not effective on any porous surface and it does absolutely nothing to eliminate mold spores in the air. And here’s the thing, it is the airborne mold spores and even the dead mold spores stirred up when you use the bleach water that cause allergic reactions, respiratory irritation, and infection.

While the links between mold and health are just beginning to become widely known, there are already a growing number of scientific papers suggesting that mold contributes to childhood and adult onset asthma. Just do a search on Google or Yahoo for mold and asthma to find the scientific papers. There are also statements by various hospitals and researchers that a large percentage of people with chronic sinus infections have a “fungal infection” meaning they have mold (fungi) growing in their sinus cavities.

So, how can we say that essential oils are effective against mold?

The essential oils used in getting rid of mold are safe enough to be considered food supplements. High quality, therapeutic grade essential oils can be taken orally. Just be certain you are using an oil from a company you trust, there are only one or two companies in the world where you trust the oils enough to take them orally. To get rid of mold, you diffuse the essential and disperse them over an entire room, which is a safer way to enjoy their benefits. And they smell so good! The oils used to eliminate mold are cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) and clove (Syzygium aromaticum), mixed with rosemary, lemon and eucalyptus radiata. This blend of essential oils doesn’t just kill mold, and it doesn’t stir up mold spores, it simply removes mold spores from the air and from surfaces in rooms where it is diffused.

Edward R Close, PhD, PE, presents (in the video clips below) the results of independent laboratory tests that show what happened when he tested this non-toxic option. He was a skeptic. He didn’t believe it would work. That changed when he saw the results from independent laboratory tests for samples taken during numerous field studies (nearly 100 to date) that he personally conducted. Now, after several years of field studies, and thanks from all his happy clients, he is convinced. For the first time ever there is a safe, non-toxic way to eliminate mold in the air, on porous and non-porous surfaces, and in the human body.

16 Doctors Speak Out – What Doctors Say About Medicine

Not all physicians believe that the only good medicines are ones that can also be harmful. Here are comments from 16 MDs who speak out about the practiice of medicine. And you will be surprised by what some of them say.

“If all the medicine in the world were thrown into the sea, it would be
bad for the fish and good for humanity”
O.W. Holmes, M.D. (Prof. of Med. Harvard University)

“The person who takes medicine must recover twice, once from the
disease and once from the medicine.” William Osler, M.D.

“Every educated physician knows that most diseases are not
appreciably helped by medicine.”
Richard C. Cabot, M.D. (Mass. Gen. Hospital)

“The cause of most disease is in the poisonous drugs physicians
superstitiously give in order to effect a cure.” Charles E. Page, M.D.

“Medicines are of subordinate importance because of their very
nature, they can only work symptomatically.” Hans Kusche, M.D.

“Drug medications consist in employing, as remedies for disease,
those things which produce disease in well persons. Its materia
medica is simply a lot of drugs or chemicals or dye-stuffs—in a word
poisons. All are incompatible with vital matter; all produce disease
when brought in contact in any manner with the living; all are poisons.”
R.T. Trail, M.D., (lecture to members of congress and the medical
profession, Smithsonian Institute, Washington D.C.)

“The greatest part of all chronic disease is created by the
suppression of acute disease by drug poisoning.”
Henry Lindlahr, M.D.

“Every drug increases and complicates the patients condition.”
Robert Henderson, M.D.

“Medicine is only palliative, for back of disease lies the cause,
and this cause no drug can reach.” Wier Mitchel, M.D.

“Medical practice has neither philosophy nor common sense to
recommend it. In sickness the body is already loaded with
impurities. By taking drug – medicines more impurities are
added, thereby the case is further embarrassed and harder to
cure.” Elmer Lee, M.D., Past Vice President, Academy of Medicine.

“Our figures show approximately four and one half million hospital
admissions annually due to the adverse reactions to drugs. Further,
the average hospital patient has as much as thirty percent chance,
depending on how long he is in, of doubling his stay due to adverse drug
reactions.” Milton Silverman, M.D. (Professor of Pharmacology,
University of California)

“What hope is there for medical science to ever become a true
science when the entire structure of medical knowledge is built
around the idea that there is an entity called disease which can be
expelled when the right drug is found?” John H. Tilden, M.D.

“We are prone to thinking of drug abuse in terms of the male
population and illicit drugs such as heroin, cocaine, and marijuana.
It may surprise you to learn that a greater problem exists with
millions of women dependent on legal prescription drugs.”
Robert Mendelsohn, M.D (author of book, “Confessions of a
Medical Heretic.)

“Why would a patient swallow a poison because he is ill, or take
that which would make a well man sick.”
L.F. Kebler, M.D.

“Drugs never cure disease. They merely hush the voice of nature’s
protest, and pull down the danger signals she erects along the
pathway of transgression. Any poison taken into the system has
to be reckoned with later on even though it palliates present
symptoms. Pain may disappear, but the patient is left in a worse
condition, though unconscious of it at the time.”
Daniel. H. Kress, M.D.

“The necessity of teaching mankind not to take drugs and
medicines, is a duty incumbent upon all who know their uncertainty
and injurious effects; and the time is not far distant when the
drug system will be abandoned.” Charles Armbruster, M. D.

With so many people losing their jobs and insurance, perhaps more will look into the alternatives available that are usually less costly and less damaging to the body.

Oils and Allopathy: Permanent Medicine vs Temporary Measures

by David Stewart, PhD, DNM

Applying essential oils is an ancient and effective modality for (1) First Aid, (2) Stress Management, (3) Pain Management, (4) Improving Your Quality of Life, and (5) Living up to Your Peak Performance. Aromatic science is a new field of research that is rediscovering the many health benefits of aromatherapy once lost in antiquity but are now being verified and refined by modern studies. “Improving Your Quality of Life” includes finding effective ways via oils for such things as diabetes, sinusitis, fibromyalgia, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, depression, cancer and a host of other chronic or terminal diseases.

Throughout the world, many cultures of the historic past anointed and healed with essential oils with great success on an intuitive and spiritual basis, but they were not able to understand nor explain their remarkable powers from an intellectual or scientific viewpoint. The tools of today’s technology are teaching us that essential oils are unique among all substances and hold many solutions to the unanswered and unmet challenges of medicine and health care as they exist today.

TREATING SYMPTOMS VS. PERMANENT HEALING

Nurses (RNs) and medical doctors (MDs) practice within a philosophical paradigm referred to as “allopathy.” The theory of allopathy is that if you remove or correct the symptoms of a condition, you have removed or corrected the condition itself.

Suppose you have a fever, mucous in the nose, a cough in your chest, an upset stomach, a headache, and can’t sleep. An allopath would prescribe something to reduce the fever, stop the runny nose, shut off your coughing reflex, neutralize the acid in your stomach, deaden the pain in your head, and put you to sleep. You might feel better, but you weren’t healed of anything.

All of the symptoms listed would be warning indicators of a deeper problem, not the problem, itself. They are like the red light on your dashboard indicating that you need motor oil. All the doctor does is to shut off the warning signals instead of diagnosing and correcting the root of the problem. This would be like unscrewing the warning light bulb under your dash to turn it off instead of recognizing that you just need to stop your car and add some oil before the engine burns up.

Allopathic medicine can relieve symptoms and make you feel better, but it does not address the problem that produced the symptoms. Hence, you can be made to feel fine and still be sick. The consequence is that your body can then come down with a different and, perhaps, worse malady with another set of symptoms.

Taken to allopathic extremes, medical doctors, unable to solve a problem in a particular member or organ in your body, will resort to surgery and simply remove that member or organ. That would certainly remove the symptoms, but you would then be maimed for life and resigned to live with one or more missing body parts. Such an approach usually leads to more complications and more unpleasant symptoms later on, if not immediately, following the surgery. But to the mind of an allopath, they would have solved the problem you had presented to them. The fact that the post-surgery patient now has additional and different problems is not relevant in allopathic thinking because the patient’s original problem has been removed. In the words of an allopathic surgeon, “The operation was a success, but as for the patient . . .”

The best of modern medicine is emergency medicine. If I am in a bad accident with major head trauma, an open bleeding wound, serious internal injuries, or a broken limb, take me to the closest emergency room. Let them apply their skills with pharmaceuticals, surgery, x-ray machines, and sophisticated technology, etc., so I can live through the crisis. But leave the healing to me by other means.

Allopathy is virtually helpless in effecting true healing following a crisis or in curing chronic diseases. They can manage your disease or condition for the rest of your life, but if you want true and permanent healing you must look elsewhere.

LIFE IS MORE THAN CHEMISTRY: THE QUANTUM CONNECTION

While allopathic medicine can save a life in an emergency, actual healing is outside the scope of allopathy. While nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle are key factors in maintaining health, the roots of most sicknesses and conditions are emotional and spiritual. The fallacy of allopathic medicine is the belief that everything that happens in our bodies is a matter of chemistry and physics. From this fallacy they conclude that there must always be a chemical or physical prescription to solve every bodily condition, even when the condition is a psychological disorder. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The chemistry and physics of our physiologic processes are but reflections of our thoughts and feelings. In fact, the classical laws of chemistry and physics do not apply to living processes, but few health care practitioners and biologists know this. The scientific laws more appropriate to describe living processes are found in quantum physics.

Classical physics deals with processes bigger than an atom or molecule. Quantum physics deals with processes smaller than an atom, i.e. individual electrons, neutrons, and protons. Quantum physics teaches us that human thought influences electron behavior. Every physiological function in the human body involves electrons. Electrons are the mind-body connection.

In classical physics, given specific conditions there are specific outcomes and definite answers. One can predict with certainty what will result from any given set of physical or chemical conditions. Questions in classical physics tend to have one right answer independent of the thoughts and intent of the experimenter.

In quantum physics, given specific conditions there are no specific outcomes and definite answers, but only a set of possibilities. One cannot predict with certainty which possibility will manifest from a given set of conditions. Questions in quantum physics will have a spectrum of probably answers, the final answer influenced by such things as the thoughts and intent of the experimenter.

THE MIND-BODY CONNECTION

Classical physics can take us to the moon and back and into the far reaches of outer space, but classical physics cannot penetrate the inner universe of the atom. Quantum physics does that and leads us directly into the realms of mind and spirit. Essential oils are bridges between all of these realms – material, mental, energetic, and spiritual.

Essential oils are composed of chemical compounds, but also have electrical properties at the level of electrons and protons. This places them partially in the realm of quantum physics. Essential oils respond to human thought. They amplify intent. This is why they work so well in combination with prayer.

When asked what a particular oil will do, one can give a chemical answer by describing the compounds of the oil and their actions in the human body, pointing out that different people will respond differently according to their own unique chemistry. One can also give a quantum physics answer when asked what an oil will do by saying, “What do you want it to do? The oil is only a carrier of possibilities. Which possibility do you want it to manifest?”

But even quantum physics and classical science combined are not sufficient to account for how our bodies work and how essential oils work in our bodies. Human function transcends the laws of the material world, as does the behavior of essential oils.

OILS AND EMOTIONAL ROOTS OF DISEASE

One of the unique aspects of essential oils is the fact that, when inhaled, they go directly to our emotional and spiritual centers in the brain. These are organs that respond only to aroma. They do not respond to spoken words or to substances that cannot pass the blood-brain barrier. The molecules of essential oils are of the right composition and size to pass through the blood-brain barrier, something most prescription drugs and most other substances cannot do.

Even water does not pass through the blood-brain barrier, which is a good thing, or else our heads would all swell up like watermelons if caught in a rain storm. But essential oils do pass through, which is one of the secrets to their amazing therapeutic abilities. They can reach into our emotional brains and unlock forgotten feelings that are the roots of our physical problems.

Essential oils also address the roots of our problems at cellular levels, right down to the DNA inside the cells. They cleanse the cells, protect them from hostile microbes, delete incorrect information in cellular memory, and reprogram proper information so that the cells have a correct job description and can function as God intended.

This is possible because essential oils are more than a mixture of chemicals. They have ultrasonic vibrational properties that go beyond the physical laws of this universe and extend into the subtle energetic template that underlies the material world, which is the source and model for all material manifestations.

NATURAL VS. SYNTHETIC

The formulas for many compounds found in essential oils can be duplicated in a laboratory and, to a chemist, they would be identical to their natural counterparts; but the chemical formula of a substance is not a complete description of that substance. Its origin and history are also relevant.

The compounds comprising plant oils were spoken into existence when God created plants. These compounds are imbued with God’s Word and God’s intelligence, which is not measurable in a laboratory nor by any physical instrument. Humans, however, can apply their intuitive abilities and discern certain properties of a substance, even its history and origin, whether produced from a living plant or from a chemical plant.

Synthetic compounds may be copies of the chemical formulas of compounds found in essential oils, but they are lacking the subtle energies contained in natural substances. Those who apply essential oils for healing soon learn that only pure, natural, complete, and unadulterated oils bring about healing, while synthetic oils, or oils adulterated by synthetic compounds, do not.

For example, in the case of oil of wintergreen, the natural oil is harmless, with many healing properties, while the synthetic version does not heal and is, in fact, toxic. Both smell and taste like wintergreen, but they are not the same therapeutically. Furthermore, research has shown that the homeopathic properties of a substance, though chemically identical, are not the same energetically for synthetic compounds as they are for natural ones.

BE SURE YOU USE THERAPEUTIC GRADE OILS

Therefore, one must be sure they are applying therapeutic grade oils and not perfume grade oils, which are cheaply produced and lacking in the therapeutic properties necessary to heal and enhance ones state of wellness. Most aromatherapy companies selling oils claim that their products are “Pure, 100% Grade A, Therapeutic, etc.” But you cannot trust labels, since their verbiage is not currently regulated nor legally defined. Oils with warnings on them about potential toxicity are probably not therapeutic and safe to use, except in massage, where they are diluted down to a 2-5% concentration in a neutral carrier oil.

To insure that you are getting therapeutic grade oils, find a company that submits their oils for routine testing by independent laboratories, whose oils are from organic sources, distilled without chemical solvents at minimum temperatures and pressures, and are bottled straight from the still with no alterations or adulterations. Talk to others who are experiencing good results from their oils, and find out where they get them. As for me, I get all of my oils from Young Living.

The proof of an oil’s quality is in its manifested benefits, which you can verify yourself by using it. Testing in a laboratory for its chemical properties is not sufficient to ascertain its levels of subtle energy necessary to provide healing benefits. At this time, I am aware of only one company in North America with a large variety of therapeutic grade oils, blends, and oil-based products of verifiable efficacy and consistent quality.

THE INTELLIGENCE OF ESSENTIAL OILS

We have said that essential oils contain intelligence, while synthetic oils do not. The intelligence in therapeutic grade essential oils is placed there by God during their creation within the plant. This intelligence is homeostatic. Homeostasis is a state of perfect balance within the human body where everything functions as it should.

There is an intelligence within essential oils that knows about homeostasis. For example, the same oil, like lavender, can energize you when you need energy or relax you when you need to relax. Cypress oil can stimulate blood flow when you need to increase circulation or can slow it down if that is what you need. Meanwhile, both lavender and cypress oils can be working in your body in a myriad other ways to restore and maintain physiological, emotional, and mental balance.

All essential oils are antimicrobial to an extent, some more than others. This means that they provide a hostile environment to bacteria, viruses, mold, fungi, and parasites. However, being intelligent, they know the difference between dangerous microbes and harmless or helpful ones. We need certain bacteria in our bodies to digest, assimilate, and metabolize our food and utilize our vitamins and minerals.

When you take antibiotics, which are prescriptions created by drug companies, they are indiscriminate, having no homeostatic intelligence. They kill all of the bacteria in your body thus leaving you with a depressed immune system and in a state of weakness.

By contrast, essential oils kill only the harmful microbes while nurturing the friendly flora of our bodies. Hence, when you overcome a cold, flu, pneumonia, or other malady with the help of essential oils, your immune system has been strengthened.

The points given above are not a complete discussion of the profound differences between allopathic medicine and natural medicine. Watch future issues of the Raindrop Messenger for more.

For more information on how and why essential oils work, see the book, “The Chemistry of Essential Oils Made Simple – (God’s Love Manifest in Molecules)” by David Stewart, available from many sources.

Reflections from the Balsam Fir Harvest

Reflections from the Balsam Fir Harvest

By Doug Corrigan, Young Living Vice President – Copied from Gary Young’s Blog

http://www.dgaryyoung.com/blog/?p=258#more-258

Gary, corporate staff and field distributors brave cold weather for rich oil.

While most spent Christmas break relaxing, Gary Young was busy organizing the recent balsam harvest near Bonners Ferry Idaho.

For the last several years the reputation and demand for Young Living Therapeutic Grade™ (YLTG) balsam fir essential oil has skyrocketed. Its recent inclusion in the popular new Deep Relief™ Essential Oil Roll-On caused supplies to dip to a critically low-level, and replenishing the balsam supply became a top priority. Gary Young, one of only a few people worldwide with experience distilling therapeutic-grade balsam fir oil, personally took the assignment.

Gary thought the harvest would double as a great learning/team building opportunity for employees and distributors alike, enabling them to “get their skin in the game.” He extended an open invitation to everyone at Young Living, citing “…bitter cold temperatures, treacherous icy roads, hard work, long days and little sleep,” with the consolation that, “you won’t starve or freeze and you’ll learn a lot.” Despite his shortcomings as a travel agent, he was true to his word and for a few days several of us ditched our desks to experience the balsam harvest first-hand. After all, according to Gary, “There is no better way to understand the seed to seal stewardship.”

My time in Idaho was a great chance to reflect on what makes Young Living truly special and gave me an even deeper respect for our founders. Particularly impressive was Gary’s hands-on approach; no matter the task, there he was—founder and president of Young Living—setting the pace. Gary often says, “I’ll never ask anyone to do something I’m not willing to do myself.” He usually utters these words right before performing a white-knuckle snowmobile maneuver, but during the harvest I found this philosophy applied to work as well.

Gary’s days began at 3 a.m., as he started the first of two three-hour driving legs, and ended around midnight after the trucks were unloaded. He personally executed or oversaw every phase of production from harvest to distillation, and anyone watching would have been amazed at the mastery, urgency, and care in his work. Of course anyone caught observing would have been quickly put to task, as I learned first-hand. In one instance I interrupted Gary running the shearer (the tree cutting machine) to call him to another task that needed his attention. He exited the machine and indicated that I should assume the controls. I shook my head and said, “I’ve never done this.” He smiled and said “If you’ll only do what you’ve already done you won’t do much.” He then gave me a two-minute crash course and promptly left. I nodded sheepishly and went to work a little wiser from the lesson.

Late one night after a long and tedious process unlocking frozen brake lines, Gary showed me his battered knuckles, smiled and said “Can you imagine my so called ‘competition’ doing what I do?” I shook my head and said, “No one knows or cares like you do, in fact no one is even close.” The moment summed up my impressions from the trip: It was a wonderful microcosm of the pioneering spirit, purpose, and passion that drives not just balsam fir, but every essential oil Young Living produces.

In celebration and honor of the recent harvest, and Young Living’s total commitment to quality, I invite everyone to plug into the balsam fir educational opportunities offered online. Simply visit the product blog online, watch the video on our website, or listen to the conference calls featuring Gary. I think you’ll enjoy Young Living’s Idaho balsam fir and other products that contain it with newfound appreciation of what goes into each bottle. But more importantly, I invite everyone to reflect on the abundant harvest of blessings you have received through Young Living and the importance of sharing with others.

All the best in all the good you do,

Doug Corrigan
