Cassia – Sweeter in Smell Than Cinnamon

12 Oils of Ancient Scripture: Cassia

February 16th, 2010

In this installment featuring oils from the 12 Oils of Ancient Scripture, Gary Young discusses the history of cassia and highlights the importance of learning about these unique essential oils.

One of the oldest known spices, cassia oil was distilled from the leaves and twigs and was a highly prized aromatic very similar to cinnamon bark in fragrance and in chemistry.

Like cinnamon, cassia contains compounds that have been shown to inhibit the growth of many types of bacteria and support immune function. A recent study conducted at the Kentucky School of Medicine showed that extracts of this herb can stimulate T lymphocyte activity and immunoglobulin production by B cells, which are key elements of immune function.

How was cassia used for its spiritual purposes? We don’t know exactly. The Egyptians believed in multiple gods, so they adorned themselves with multiple oils to please them. We know that these oils were so treasured that they were also recognized for their powerful ability to help increase spiritual connection and awareness.

We also have to keep in mind that in ancient times the majority of people did not have access to written records or have the ability to read or write. This is why they communicated through touch and scent. Cassia, myrrh, and sandalwood were some of the oils that were used in mummification or burial. They believed that essential oils preserved the body and carried it into the afterlife and prepared them for their journey back. Some people even believed that the oils created a fragrance trail that could be followed back to the present world. Perhaps this is why these oils were regarded with such high esteem. But there are still many aspects that we don’t understand at this time.

If we derived physical benefits from these oils we may also derive spiritual benefits as well. I have traveled the ancient lands and gone to these ancient places, from the shores of the Arabian Sea to the Red Sea. I have traveled the vast wilderness of the desert to the lost city of Ubar, the Atlantis of the sands, to Petra, Jordan, to the Judean desert, Masada, Cumran, and Ghetti. I have studied the ruins where long ago precious resins such as balsam and frankincense were distilled to make essential oils. Then I traveled into Egypt following the history of these aromatics and oils that were given to us in the very beginning of time. I believe that there was a very profound purpose for the gift of these oils and resins. Only today are we beginning to appreciate the immense value of aromatics and essential oils.

It is my desire that you have an understanding of how these oils can improve your life and also the lives of those around you. Essential oils are truly the missing link of modern health and perhaps they are also a missing link in helping to heighten your spiritual connections. I hope they inspire you and empower you to improve your life in every way.

Gary Young

Winter Treatments for Your Hair

Winter Treatments for Your Tresses

December 10th, 2009

lavenderTis’ the season for holiday styles and updos—and for winter weather to wreak havoc on your hair. Did you know that the cold, dry weather can cause hair to be brittle and unhealthy? On top of that, indoor heating can dry it out even further, causing extra frizz and making it even harder to style. So to help combat bad hair days during the holidays, here a few essential oil-infused recipes to help you protect and repair weather-worn hair:

Hot Oil Treatment for Damaged Hair

Ingredients:

Directions:

Mix all ingredients well. Warm oil to a comfortable temperature and apply the mixture to damp hair. Cover hair in a plastic wrap and apply a hot towel for 20 minutes. Shampoo.

Lavender & Rosemary Hot Oil Treatment

Ingredients:

Directions:

Mix all ingredients well. Warm oil to a comfortable temperature and apply the mixture to damp hair. Cover hair in a plastic wrap and apply a hot towel for 20 minutes. Shampoo.

Super Deep Hot Oil Treatment

Ingredients:

Directions:

Melt coconut oil in a double broiler on low temperature. Add other carrier oils and allow to cool. Add essential oils. Apply to hair and wrap in a towel for 30–45 minutes. Shampoo.

By treating your locks to these hot oil treatments, your tresses will not only survive winter, but will also be beautiful and healthy come springtime. The Lavender and Rosemary Hot Oil Treatment is one of my favorites: Let me know which one works for you! And if you’re looking for additional cold weather hair protection, try implementing the following tips into your daily hair care routine:

  • Wash your hair with lukewarm water. Hot water can strip your hair of moisture, and during the winter you need all the moisture you can get!

  • Use a quality conditioner. If you have dry hair to begin with you may want to look for a hair conditioner that is made for dry hair, such as Young Living’s Rosewood Moisturizing Conditioner.

  • Use styling tools designed to lock in moisture. Using hair tools such as ionic hairdryers and ceramic-plated straighteners will style your hair without drying it.

  • Don’t go outside with wet hair. If you expose wet hair to cold winter weather, you risk the possibility of your hair freezing, which leaves it prone to breaking and getting severely damaged.

  • Use a deep conditioner or hot oil treatment at least once a week. Your hair needs this extra attention to help repair and undo winter damage. Check out the end of this post for some essential oil-enhanced recipes for home hair treatments!

  • Wear a hat or wear your hair up as much as possible. Choose a hat that will not flatten your hair completely, but one that will just cover up most of your hair. Fortunately, there are lots of cute style choices that can make this attractive as well as functional. Wearing your hair back and up will also help reduce exposure to the cold. Just remember: This doesn’t have to be the typical ponytail. Experiment with cute updos or sleek chignons to help protect your hair.

  • Rub a dryer sheet on your hair brushes and combs to minimize static electricity. This might sound silly, but it works! Because most people have their heat on and their house closed up, static cling is a huge problem in winter. This simple little trick will save you that highly undesirable frizz frenzy.

Removing Toxins From Your Home

REMOVING TOXINS FROM YOUR HOME
By Edward R Close, PhD, and Jacquelyn A Close, RA

A Chemical World

Most consumers brush their teeth every day. Most bathe or shower with soaps, wash their hair in shampoo, use a conditioner, and perhaps use moisturizing lotions and cosmetics, deodorants, shaving cream, hair spray, and other personal care items. Like most people in the world, you probably also use standard cleaners purchased at your local grocery store or general store, or warehouse giant, to clean floors, windows, counter tops, bathrooms, rugs, walls, tile, cabinets, and you probably don’t think about the ingredients in these products because you know that the government has agencies of people who are supposed to be watching out for you. Right?

What you don’t realize is that it would take more people than there are living in the world today to actually determine if the synthetic, man-made chemicals used in all these items that we use in our homes and on our bodies are safe.

You might wonder:  How is that possible?

Well, in 1907 there were only about 12,000 man-made synthetic chemicals. However, since the 1960s the number of chemicals in our environment has exploded, right along with poorer indoor air quality, allergies and a host of much more serious diseases of the respiratory and immune systems. Our bodies are under attack by substances that our body is not able to metabolize, process or eliminate, and what happens is that these substances eventually get stored in our tissues, they bio-accumulate, and they create health problems, including cancers, asthma, brain disorders, nervous system disorders, and more.

According to the Chemical Abstract Society, the agency responsible for recording all the new patented man-made synthetic chemicals:

  • 1907                             ~12,000   abstracts were recorded
  • 1939                            ~ 26,000   abstracts had been recorded
  • 1965                              212,000
  • Nov 6, 2008              39,766,532
  • July 31, 2009            49,077,828   chemical abstracts had been recorded

And the number continues to grow at an average rate of over 10,000 new chemicals every single day.

It is impossible for any government agency to monitor this explosion of chemicals. In fact, as stated earlier, if every person on the Earth were employed in evaluating these chemicals, it would be a full-time job for their entire life-time and that would not be sufficient.

Where are the Toxins in Your Home?
The most invasive toxins in your home can be found under your kitchen sink, in your laundry room, and in your bathroom.

Many conventional cleaning products are packed with harsh cleaning chemicals, artificial colors and synthetic fragrances. Personal care items that we use every day or every week for years are absorbed through our skin and into our brains and other organs and tissues. All of these release toxins including toxic fumes that are known to cause irritation to eyes, lungs, nasal passages, and the skin.

Antibacterial soaps and antibacterial compounds in cleaners are reported by many sources to add to antibiotic resistance, and possibly contribute to the mutation of ordinary bacteria and viruses into super-bugs. Articles and news items about the dangers of antibacterial products appear regularly, yet many people continue using them thinking they are protecting themselves and their family. The antibiotic used in most all these products is, according to the EPA, contaminated with dioxins formed during the manufacturing process. And when triclosan, the antibiotic used in most antibacterial products, combines with chlorinated tap water, a super dioxin – a carcinogen – is formed.

Does Your Toothpaste Have A Warning Label?

Most toothpastes have a warning label that says if swallowed, contact your nearest poison control center. Some people think that this warning is simply because it contains fluoride, but sadly they are misinformed. That is only one of the ingredients in toothpaste that can be hazardous.

Do you think of your toothpaste, your shampoo, your facial soap, your juice, your window cleaner as hazardous chemicals?

The Chemical Onslaught – By the Numbers
Of the roughly 39 million synthetic chemicals that are currently available commercially:
- More than 500 chemicals for cleaning and personal care are found
in the average American Home
- Over 800 neurotoxins have been used in cosmetics and perfumes
- Approximately 3,000 chemicals are added to our foods
- Over 700 chemicals have been found in our drinking water
- Over 400 have been found in human tissues
- Over 200 toxic and hazardous chemicals have been found
in the umbilical cords of newborns

DIFFUSING ESSENTIAL OILS in YOUR HOME and OFFICE

Diffusing Essential Oils in Your Home and Office

Fresh Awareness

by Jacquelyn Close, RA

There is little more appealing to the senses than to walk into a room that smells fresh and clean, inviting and soothing. That sensory experience is just one of the many wondrous beauties offered to us when we diffuse essential oils in our homes and workplaces.

We have diffused in our home and offices for nearly 15 years. The mail and package delivery folks and our clients and customers who have come to our places of business have frequently commented to us how they wish they could spend their whole day in our offices because it always smells so good! They tell us they love it, and that no place else they visit during the day smells so inviting and welcoming.

What a great compliment! What if your clients and customers felt that way? Wouldn’t that be a good thing for your business?

It seemed that sharing with you some of my favorite essential oil combinations for diffusing could be exciting and helpful. That way you can enjoy the same compliments as well as the benefits the oils provide.

Citrus Fresh – Cedarwood – Cinnamon Bark

Recently we were in Los Angeles, California, for a little over a week. We stayed at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel – the famous hotel with the four circular towers that you see in so many movies. While there, I diffused a custom blend of Young Living essential oils that I created by simply adding the oils to the cold-air diffuser we always take with us and run in our room.

The cleaning staff left us notes on an almost daily basis asking what we were doing. What makes it smell so good in here? And, “How can I get some of whatever it is you are doing in here?”

Well, we use Young Living’s Lavender Shampoo and Conditioner, the Young Living Bath and Shower Gels – Sensation and Morning Start – and the Thieves Foaming Hand Soap. I use Orange Blossom Facial Wash. We use the Young Living Dentarome Plus Toothpaste and Fresh Essence Mouthwash. All of these products have essential oils in them, and give off scents that are natural – not chemical or synthetic. It is so nice to see how anyone can appreciate the difference between synthetics chemicals and natural scents, just by smelling them in the air, because many of these folks told me when I talked with them that they couldn’t stand perfumes.

During the week, we were also diffusing this customized blend I had made, which I call Fresh Awareness. You can make your own version of this blend. Just combine in a diffuser well, or an empty essential oil amber or dark blue bottle, the following oils:

30 drops Citrus Fresh

10 drops Cedarwood

12 drops Cinnamon Bark

It is a delightfully appealing, sweet and spicy aroma that smells very clean and fresh. You can diffuse this blend for 15 minutes, or for several hours at a time, or all the time  – 24/7  – depending on your preference.

The Benefits and Known Effects for These Oils

CITRUS FRESH – This is a blend of oils available from Young Living

Citrus Fresh is comprised of:  Orange, Tangerine, Lemon, Mandarin, Grapefruit and Spearmint. According to the Essential Oil Desk Reference, Fourth Edition, Citrus Fresh:

Stimulates the right brain to amplify creativity and well-being as well as eradicate anxiety. Works well as an air purifier. University Researchers in Japan found that diffusing a citrus fragrance in an office environment improved mental accuracy and concentration by 54 percent. When diffused, it adds a clean, fresh scent to any environment.

Citrus oils are great for elevating the mind and lifting the emotions. Plus, they all have that fresh, clean smell without any of the chemical harshness of other synthetic chemical cleaners and air fresheners. Citrus oils are generally cold-pressed from the rind of the fruit and contain high levels of the compound d-limonene, a monoterpene that is said to restore, awaken, or reprogram the correct information into cellular memory.

D-limonene is also known – according to numerous scientific studies worldwide – to prevent, stop and even reverse cancer. Cancer is often said to be the faulty replication of cells. Perhaps it is this ability to reprogram the cellular memory with proper information that accounts for d-limonene being so effective against cancers, I don’t know. It is, however, hard to believe that so striking a correlation could be a total coincidence.

Citrus oils are truly great oils to have on-hand and diffuse on a regular basis. They have that wonderful clean, fresh scent, and are relatively inexpensive compared to other oils.

CEDARWOOD OIL

Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica) — This species of Cedar is steam distilled from the bark, and is thought to be the most closely related to the biblical Cedars of Lebanon.

Throughout antiquity, Cedarwood has been used for its ability to stimulate the lymph system, to combat bacteria, and to stimulate the limbic region of the brain. Dr. Terry Friedmann, MD, found in clinical tests that Cedarwood oil was able to successfully treat ADD and ADHD (attention deficit disorders) in children. It is recognized for its calming, purifying properties. And in the Essential Oil Desk Reference (EODR), Fourth Edition, two research papers are listed that address the use of Cedarwood oil. One was a Randomized trial of aromatherapy, Successful treatment for Alopecia Areata. Arch Dermatol. 1998;134 (11):1349-52.

I met a woman, we were going through training for using essential oils in clinical settings, who had a grandson with Alopecia. Her grandson was about 16 years old and had almost no hair on his head at all when they started an experiment with Cedarwood oil. Her grandson had a couple of spots of stubble but was otherwise bald. She asked him to put Cedarwood oil on his head every day for 45 days and she took pictures every week to document the results. She showed our entire class the pictures she took. Her grandson did not want to have the oil on his head during the day, when the kids at school might smell it, so he applied the oil at night, left it on while he slept, and showered every morning before going to school. His grandmother said he didn’t put the oil on every single night, but he was pretty consistent for the 45 days, only missing a night here and there. The photographs were amazing, and at the end of the 45 days, this young man had a full head of hair more than 2 inches long, all over his head. No more spots. Complete coverage. And he had to get a haircut. It was stunning to see the side-by-side difference from the first photo to the last.

What a great experiment! Why don’t more people know about this? Well, essential oils cannot be patented and therefore there is little interest in these wondrous, organic, natural plant oils and the relatively inexpensive miracles they sometimes produce.

And it often seems strange to people, especially those who are new to using essential oils, that one single essential oil can have so many different uses. However, essential oils often have hundreds of compounds. And while it is a well known fact in the essential oil industry that not even one essential oil has had every constituent in its rich makeup identified. Few outside this industry know anything about them. Less than 1/10th of 1% of the world’s population has even heard of essential oils. Who knows what wonders are yet to be discovered in the simple plants put here for our healing.

Dr. David Stewart says in his book, Healing Oils of the Bible, that Cedarwood oil was known in Biblical times to be good for stimulating the mind and clearing emotional blockages. Cedarwood is mentioned 25 times in the Bible, in 8 books of the Bible, and twice in the Apocrypha. And Cedarwood is high in sesquiterpenes, a compound known for its ability to delete faulty information from cellular memory.

So, now we have talked about two oils, one high in monoterpenes and one high in sesquiterpenes. These are terms used by chemists in identifying various types of compounds found in essential oils, and each compound produces specific and identifiable effects.

CINNAMON BARK

Cinnamon Bark (Cinnamomum verum) oil is one of the components of the Thieves essential oil blend. The many references I have say that cinnamon is a known and proven, powerful antifungal agent. Yet cinnamon is safe enough to eat, and  it is used throughout the food industry to preserve and protect foods. It is also well known by scientists and researchers as a COX2 inhibitor – a powerful anti-inflammatory, as well as functioning as an antibacterial, antiviral, anticoagulant, as a circulatory stimulant, and an antiparasitic oil. It has recently been studied and found to have potential benefits for controlling blood sugar. Perhaps you have seen something about this on the news or the internet during the past year.

Cinnamon Bark oil is used for cardiovascular disease, infectious diseases, viral infections, ulcers, digestive complaints, and warts. According to the EODR, its fragrance is thought to attract wealth.

The Bible says Cinnamon oil was part of the Holy Anointing Oil used by the Hebrews to anoint the priests, the altar, the instruments and utensils, and the laver where people washed their hands. This powerful essential oil is high in the organic compounds known as aldehydes (40-50%) and phenols (20-30%). Aldehydes are, according to The Chemistry of Essential Oils Made Simple, by Dr. David Stewart, and other references I have on hand, responsible for the fragrance and aroma of an oil. Aldehydes are also thought to be the source of the anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties of oils. Phenolic compounds (Phenols) are known to cleanse receptor sites.

So, this Fresh Awareness blend, which has had such a positive response from people who experience it, contains oils that cleanse receptor sites, delete or erase faulty programming in cellular memory, and reprogram proper cellular information so that our bodies function in accordance with our Original Blueprint of wholeness, health and happiness. It isn’t quite as easy to understand or enjoy the science as it is the experience of this blend of essential oils, but it is gratifying to know that the science behind this beautiful blend of oils substantiates what we experience with our mind and our senses when we smell it.

It makes us feel good. It lifts or elevates our mood. It helps us concentrate better.

I believe there is a beautiful, divine plan for all of creation, and that experiences and science help us to understand more about that plan and the love of God that surrounds us every day. Not all experiences are pleasant, but we can fill our lives with the things that help us remember the good. We can choose to let go of the bad and to bury it with the past and move forward to a better tomorrow. I have found that essential oils are an integral part of my journey and have helped me physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually to re-awaken that beautiful, divine plan for my life. I believe that God created oils for that purpose. If you are willing to step out of habit and try something new, you too can experience the wondrous beauty offered to us by essential oils.

Young Living’s Wintergreen Essential Oil

Young Living’s Wintergreen Essential Oil

By D. Gary Young, President and Founder of Young Living

One thing I have prided myself and Young Living on is the total quality of the essential oils we provide. From the soil used, how the plants are harvested, the distillation process, to frequent intensive testing for impurities; Young Living’s legacy is built on the trust and quality of our products. That’s why Young Living is, and has remained, the world leader in essential oils for all these years!

wintergreen

One amazing essential oil we have is wintergreen. We found the perfect nutrient-rich area to grow this oil in southern China. Our wintergreen supplier (and all other suppliers we use) must meet what we call the Young Living Therapeutic Grade (YLTG) standard. This standard means every essential oil Young Living distills or sources contain only the purest ingredients grown from the optimal soil. This ensures that the oil does what nature has intended it to do – heal and give comfort. It is a standard that exceeds what our competitors can only hope to reach.

We regularly go and meet with our suppliers so I asked two of our sourcing experts, Mary Lou Jacobsen and Sue Chao to personally visit our supplier’s wintergreen fields. Their report was just as I expected; the fields, harvesting techniques, and distillation processes continued to meet and exceed our stringent requirements.

But folks, our quality guidelines don’t end there. Once we receive a shipment of wintergreen essential oil, EACH batch undergoes testing in our labs to ensure nothing was diluted or changed synthetically. If any testing results come back below our guidelines, the batch is sent back to the supplier. Unfortunately for many unknowing consumers, these Young Living rejected batches are resold to other producers, that then turn around and sell these counterfeit “essential oils.” It’s unfortunate, but that’s how many of our producers do business.

I want to reiterate a statement recently released about Young Living’s wintergreen testing:

“As part of the lab tests, wintergreen is also subjected to isotopic ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) analysis. Based on the carbon 13 and carbon 12 isotopic ratio, the IRMS can determine whether a particular lot of wintergreen is naturally sourced or synthetic (created in a lab). From 2001 to 2009, every batch of wintergreen essential oil offered by Young Living has undergone this test. The results from this 8-year period show that our wintergreen essential oil ranges from -33.1 to -34.26, or well within the isotopic range for this essential oil. By contrast, the isotopic range for synthetic wintergreen is -26 to -28. Our personalized sourcing approach, combined with our state-of-the-art testing, ensures that each and every essential oil—from balsam fir to wintergreen—is of the highest, most potent therapeutic quality, just as nature intended.”

It is vital to understand that wintergreen from Young Living and wintergreen from another producer is the same in name alone.

There are other producers in addition to Young Living and always will be. Some will be successful; some will come and go just as fast as they started. But one thing will remain – Young Living’s total commitment to providing you with unprecedented quality in each and every essential oil we produce.

Essentialy Yours,

Gary Young

Swine Flu and Essential Oils – Don’t Panic – Just Be Prepared!

by Jacquelyn Close, Registered Aromatherapist

Today, April 27th, 2009, it’s on the TV, the radio, in the news. Everywhere you turn you hear about more who are sick or dying from the latest Swine Flu outbreak.

The CDC website reports that a total of 40 laboratory confirmed cases have been documented in the USA, including the States of New York, California, Texas, Kansas, and Ohio. CNN reported this morning that over 1,600 cases have been documented in Mexico City, and that 149 are confirmed dead there from this latest version of swine influenza. Interesting to me was that they also reported that there are 36,000 deaths annually that are attributed to the flu.

What we who use oils know and what the greater world population has not yet discovered is that essential oils offer a highly effective option for dealing with viruses.

Here is what Maurice had to say about Oils and Influenza

*******
Hello Everyone,

From time to time I take my Nansee to an ND Scientist who specializes in viruses, bacteria, parasites & of course cancer. It’s a long story but mainly we go to have her blood checked. The doctor knows I am with Young Living Essential Oils. So, when I called to make an appointment he asked if I had an unopened bottle of Oregano and if so please bring with, he would like to test it.

When we walked in there was a lady leaving who had Influenza. The doctor checked Nansee’s blood under the scope and then asked if I brought the Oregano. I handed the bottle to him & he said I want to tell you something about Gary Young but first I need to get something to test this with from the other room. When he came back he started to talk about the test procedure. I reminded him he was going to tell me something about Gary. Yes Indeed he was.

Your Gary Young is a genius when it comes to essential oils and is considered a genius in the scientific community. He has without a doubt the best farms in the U.S. and second to none in the world.

Guess who’s gloating hearing all of this? Next he said, aside from that he also has built the best distillers in the world. All of his studies of the oils around the world has sure paid off and of course the contribution of his formulations and writings has put him on top of a select group.

While he was talking he opened the Oregano and said. ” You were right, Maurice, this is good stuff, no need to test it as the smell of carvacrol in the oil is perfect as is the color.”

Trust me folks, I had no idea this man knew so much about essential oils.

Next: “Would you like to see what your Oregano will do to Influenza? I have it on a slide from the lady who just left. Look in the microscope first to see what it looks like.”

It was a black spidery mass surrounded by blood. Now her sample is between two slides and we will apply the Oregano to the edge. If it is as good as I say, it will suck the black mass to it and you will see the mass turn white. This means of course that it is destroyed. He applied the oil to the edge and said look now into the scope and tell me what is happening.

I was amazed. The oregano was pulling the black mass toward it and the mass was turning white.

There you have it. What an exciting day.

Maurice

Our daughter-in-law, Heather, had mono and the doctors told her she would be sick for at least 2 weeks to 2 months or longer. They had nothing to offer her in the way of treatment for this virus. They told her all she could do was “Just go home and rest.”

According to WebMD:

“Mononucleosis, also called “mono,” is a common viral illness that can leave you feeling tired and weak for weeks or months. Mono goes away on its own, but lots of rest and good self-care can help you feel better.”

Heather was in pain. Her throat was swollen almost shut. She was miserable and they told her they could do nothing for her. She came to me in tears.

Taking a blend of all natural essential oils in “00” capsules, she was over her virus and completely well in 3 days. She went back to work only 4 days after she got sick. I don’t know anything else that works that fast or that well. She had been a skeptic about oils until this happened, now she knows they work better than anything else she has ever tried.

And what a joy to have something to turn to that won’t hurt you, has no known side effects, and it works when conventional medicine has nothing to offer.

That same natural antibiotic and anti-viral blend of oils may help you if you think you might be sick.

In a “00” capsule combine:

8-10 drops Thieves Essential Oil Blend

4 drops Frankincense Oil

4 drops Oregano oil

Shake and take every 2 hours if you are already sick.

If you feel like you are just coming down with something, take 1-3 capsules a day until you feel better.

Most companies do not produce oils that are safe enough to take internally. Don’t know where to get safe oils? Drop me an email at jac@jacquelynclose.com

A friend who works in the emergency room of the local hospital told me I had saved more than $2,000 by not going to the emergency room. Both my son and I have almost no visible scar tissue and full use of the finger, arms and thumb and hands that were affected.

Essential Oil Toxicity – Three Schools of Thought

Essential Oil Toxicity – Three Schools of Thought
By Vicki Opfer

March 2009

When single molecules are extracted out of an oil and are used by themselves, or they are created synthetically in a lab, they can be toxic.  Phenols are one of those.  So does that mean that oils containing phenols need to be used cautiously?

When those same molecules are left in the oil, and the pure, whole, unadulterated essential oil is used, we don’t see the same toxicity. This is because there are other molecules that seem to buffer those molecules in the body.

I’d like to remind you that there are 3 models of aromatherapy today:

1. the English – oils are usually diluted, and the English trained aromatherapists seem to be afraid to use the oils.   I wonder whether this model was created because someone used synthetic or low quality oils and observed a bad response.

2. the German model – essential oils are used primarily through smell, often for emotional balancing or mood enhancement.

3. the French model – the oils are used undiluted, often in fairly large quantities.  They use them topically, internally, vaginally, rectally, etc.   They do not seem to be afraid of toxicity, as French medical doctors have told me that they simply don’t observe toxicity when using pure, therapeutic grade oils.  They told me that essential oils are very different than fatty oils which can be hard on the liver.  Pure essential oils are light, volatile, and do not affect the liver.   Scientists can see them in the bloodstream within a few minutes of application, and within 2.5 hours, all traces of them are gone.   However, the effects have been known to last indefinitely.

When I hear someone who is concerned about essential oil toxicity, or seem to be afraid to use oils, I realize that they have been trained in the English model.

With that said, yes, some oils like oregano and cinnamon can be warm on the skin.   If an oil heats up on the skin, we rub a little pure vegetable oil over the area and it cools down within a few minutes.

If someone is very sick, pregnant, very young, or very old, we’re respectful and use small quantities of oils, and we often choose oils which are extremely gentle on the body such as lavender and chamomile.  It’s not that we think that the oils can cause harm.   We just choose to always err on the side of caution, and we’re respectful.

I’ve been in Young Living for 15 years now, and I have trained and observed thousands of people, and I have never seen anyone hurt, in any way, by any of our essential oils.

On a very rare occasion, someone will break out in a rash after using an oil, and when I ask, “Is this the first time you’ve ever had a rash response?”   Their answer is always the same – “No, I’ve had rashes before.”   The oils seem to be trying to get rid of toxins in the body, and since the skin is an eliminative organ, sometimes if other eliminative organs are compromised, the body will use the skin. When in doubt, use a small amount, and see what happens.

When someone is on chemotherapy, it’s a choice they’ve made consciously, and we need to respect their choice.  They are having chemicals put into their body to purposely lower the immune system or kill cells – some healthy, and some not healthy.   I just don’t think it’s a good idea to bombard the body with a lot of essential oils during that time, as it might be confusing.   If someone I loved was on chemotherapy, I might offer them simple oils like lavender to help them sleep, or a little PanAway for the pain, but I would wait until they were finished with their chemotherapy and wanted to rebuild their body before using larger amounts of essential oils.

We have a lot to offer just to help improve the quality of life for our loved ones – help ease their pain and depression, and help them get a better night’s sleep.  It’s a gift we can give them.

Prostate Cancer? Don’t Let Your Doctor Scare You To Death!

Prostate Cancer? Don’t Let Your Doctor Scare You to Death!

by Jacquelyn Close

Today, Friday, March 20th, 2009, on CNN’s segment called the Daily Dose, a woman MD on the segment said that research now shows that chemotherapy actually increases the rate of death in men with Prostate Cancer. They found that men who do nothing can live 20 to 30 fairly healthy years. Men who undergo chemotherapy usually die within 3 years of treatment. And this was true even for advanced stages of Prostate Cancer.

I tried to find this report on CNN’s website, so I could get the name of the Doctor, but a search did not yield results. If you weren’t watching this, I hope that this information will come to light so that you and your families can be assured of the truth.

Doctors have known for years that chemotherapy kills. Ralph W Moss, PhD, formerly with Sloan Kettering Cancer Institute, has written numerous reports and books exposing the fact that chemotherapy is only moderately effective for 4 cancers, Prostate Cancer and Breast Cancer are not among those 4. Yet Doctors continue to prescribe chemotherapy for 100% of cancers and insurance companies continue to pay for it, because it is the accepted standard of care. What is caring about scaring someone into going through chemotherapy when you are in fact killing that person?

I chose to forgo chemotherapy in 1985 when I was told I had just 2 months to live. I preferred to take my chances with less drastic options. I did have radiation therapy, even though my oncologist, the head of oncology at Massachussetts General Hospital, thought that it would be a waste of time. In fact, he required that I sign a paper acknowledging my understanding that they had given me so much radiation that if I didn’t die from the cancer, I would be dead from the radiation in 2 years.

It was not the doctors, surgeons, oncologists, or the radiation that rid my body of cancer. It was the healing power of faith in God, in God’s love, Meditation, Prayer, Positive Healing Affirmations, diet, exercise, and other natural means that changed my life. When I found essential oils my whole life changed for the better and I haven’t seen a doctor since 1999. Personally, I think I’m healthier and happier for it.

May you find a way through your darkest hours with hope, light and love.

Anti-biotics vs. Pro-biotics

Anti-biotics vs. Pro-biotics

by Dana Christisen, CRP, Natural Health Coach

Probiotics. We all know that the prefix pro- means ‘for’ but what you may not know is the word biotic means life. When I look at the word probiotic, I see “for life”. This led me to consider the word anti-biotic. The prefix anti- means against, and the word biotic still means life, which makes antibiotic “against life”.

Has anyone noticed the amount of folks that need to take antibiotics lately? Has anyone besides myself noticed the decline in the effectiveness of these drugs? When someone tells me they are on an antibiotic, I immediately ask them if they are taking a probiotic also. Approximately 99 out of 100 people that I ask, don’t have a clue what a probiotic is. In fact, it is kind of funny, but the spell checker on my word processor does not know what it is either because every time I have typed this word, it has been underlined in red.

In our bodies, there is a whole world of microorganisms. They are there in the billions and they will continue to be there even after we are dead (at least for a while). They have a job to do. Some of these bacteria are ‘friendly’ or good and some of the bacteria are bad. They all have names. Some of you may recognize these names like Helicobacter pylori and Candida Albicans. Yeast infections, ulcers, gastritis and many types of cancer can be caused by these bad bacteria, mostly in folks with immune systems that are challenged.

You may recognize some of the names of friendly bacteria like Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium. Unlike the many dis-eases listed in association with bad bacteria, these good bacteria have a huge list of health conditions that they help to correct. Probiotic supplementation may help to prevent colon cancer, may lower cholesterol, may help to lower blood pressure, improve your immune system and help to prevent infections, may reduce inflammation, may help your body to absorb minerals and may help relieve some diarrhea.

Our balance of helpful bacteria versus harmful bacteria is supposed to be 85 percent helpful to 15 percent harmful. This ratio is hard to maintain in this environment that we live in. Exposure to toxins in our food, the air we breathe, chlorine in water supplies, and antibiotics, all take a toll on the good bacteria in our bodies. The fact is that there will be bacteria in your body, however you get to choose whether it is mostly good or mostly bad.

One way I thought of that helps me to describe this bacteria in our bodies is to compare it to a garden. Whether your garden has flowers or vegetables in it, you will have weeds that grow up in your garden. Would you consider putting Round-up on the entire garden just because you had a few weeds? When you take an antibiotic for an infection, it tries to kill all of the bacteria, not only the culprit behind your infection. But guess what happens, they don’t all die, only the weak ones. Then you may be left with a gut full of very strong bad bacteria.

This is one reason why it is so important for everyone to supplement their diet with probiotics. You do get them from some foods like yogurt, and years ago, we would get them from the soil. However, in this day and age, with the chemicals that are sprayed on our crops, we no longer get very much good bacteria from the earth.

Now that you know why to supplement with probiotics, let me tell you when. What I like to do is take my probiotic supplements right before bed. This way they have a chance to work into the body and not be harmed by chlorine in water or toxins in my food. I take a supplement of about 15 billion bacteria per serving and contains ten different strains of bacteria. When I reach 50, I will need to increase that amount to 30 billion. Also, the probiotic supplement that I take is enteric-coated, which means that the bacteria will make it to the intestines.

I am not a doctor and I do not diagnose or treat any health condition. I am only giving you a compilation of information that I have gained over the years of studying natural health. Any information I am giving you is only my opinion and is what I would do for myself. Until next week, may all of your bacteria be good ones, naturally speaking.
